Headgear of the Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces

In many ways the variety of headgear used by different branches of the Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces was more diverse than uniforms. Berets were worn by all branches with varying color and badges for unit and branch affiliation. US made M1 helmets were the most extensively used single type of headgear, but in many instances troops operated in field caps, boonie, bush caps, and berets without helmets. All of these caps also appeared in varieties of camouflage. Helmets and a small fraction of caps were imported, but as with uniforms, virtually all berets, bush caps, boonie, and field caps were made in Vietnam. Unfortunately, as with uniforms and all other types of South Vietnamese military items many replicas-fakes exist today of ARVN headgear, particularly being produced as items in Vietnam today often used to fool unsuspecting tourists. However, the items shown on this page are all original and are held in the Republic of Vietnam Historical Society's collection. Most of these pieces trace back to different US servicemen, some of whom served as advisors.
